Medical Assistant Department Overview

Dedicated to Patient Care
As a Medical Assistant you will be a professional dedicated to assisting in patient care management. Your duties are varied and include greeting patients, updating and filling patient medical records, filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments and arranging admission and laboratory services. You might even work with patients with discharge instructions, authorize medication refills, or even perform x-ray procedures. As a Medical Assistant you will be classified as an allied health practitioner working in any of a number of different medical facilities.

South Central College’s Medical Assistant program can lead you to a Bachelor’s in Healthcare Management.

Core Competencies

  1. Use effective oral and written communicatin skills to engage with patients, family members and other health care professionals
  2. Have knowledge of procedures for preparing patients for examinations and/or lab tests
  3. Describe and demonstrate the proper procedures for using infection control and universal procedures
  4. Engage with the health care interdisciplinary team using accurate medical terminology while referencing appropriate medical inforamtion
  5. Have knowledge of and understanding of health care informatics as it related to the role of the Medical Assistant
